What do the frequencies/bands mean?
GSM phones operate on up to 4 different frequencies as well as up 3 different high speed (3G, UMTS, HSDPA) frequencies. In North America, the predominant frequency is the 1900 mhz frequency. This is the mininum requirement for using your phone in Canada or the U.S. The 850 mhz frequency is also used in Canada and the U.S. so you will get significantly better performance out a phone that has both frequencies. Europe, Asia, Africa and most other places in the world use the 900 and 1800 bands. For more information on GSM and roaming, an excellent resource is www.gsmworld.com.
3G Frequencies are used for high speed data connections which facilitate services such as video calling, mobile TV and other services may be available depending on your service provider. To access your provider's high speed network in Canada and the US, the phone must support UMTS or HSPDA on the 850 and/or 1900 mhz band. The 2100 band will only operate in Europe and Asia.
